About Photo Colorizer

Bring grayscale photos to life: an AI colorization network predicts the colors while your photo's original brightness and detail are preserved — the result keeps the contrast you started with. The model runs directly on your device; unlike online colorizers, your photo is never uploaded.

How to use Photo Colorizer

  1. Drop a black & white photo into the upload area.
  2. Wait a few seconds while the AI colorizes it (the first visit downloads the ~62 MB model, then it is cached).
  3. Adjust the color intensity slider if the colors look too strong or too weak.
  4. Download the colorized PNG.

How AI photo colorization works here

The approach

The neural network looks at the grayscale image and predicts a full-color version. We then take only the predicted colors and re-apply your photo's original brightness on top — technically we merge the model's color channels (a/b in LAB space) with the original lightness channel. That's why details, shadows, and contrast survive instead of being washed out by the model.

The color intensity slider scales the predicted colors up or down, so you can go from subtle tinting to vivid color.

What works best

  • Portraits and people photos — skin tones and clothing are well represented in the training data
  • Landscapes and street scenes with clear objects
  • Scans of old photos (any scan artifacts are inherited, so clean scans colorize better)

Highly unusual subjects or heavy damage can produce guessed-at colors — colorization is always an interpretation, since the original colors are gone.

Why your photos stay private

Commercial colorizers ask you to upload your photos — often old family pictures, the most personal kind. Here the model runs locally via WebAssembly: only the model itself is downloaded (once, from Hugging Face), and your image never leaves your computer.

Frequently asked questions

Is this photo colorizer really free?

Yes — free with no account, no watermark, and no limit on the number of photos.

Is my photo uploaded to a server?

No. The AI model runs locally on your device via WebAssembly. Only the model itself is downloaded (once) from Hugging Face; your image never leaves your computer.

Why does the first visit take longer?

The ~62 MB model is downloaded on first use and then cached by your browser. Subsequent visits start immediately.

Are the colors the real original colors?

No — colorization is an educated prediction by the AI, since the original color information no longer exists. The results are realistic but interpretive.

Which browsers are supported?

Any modern browser on desktop or mobile: Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.
