How AI upscaling differs from plain resizing

Normal resizing just interpolates pixels — enlarge a small photo and it turns soft and blurry. A super-resolution network like Swin2SR was trained on millions of image pairs (low-res → high-res) and has learned what detail should look like: edges stay crisp, textures stay readable, and small text becomes legible again.

The result is not invented from nothing — it is a learned reconstruction, which is why it works best on photos and artwork rather than on already-noisy or heavily compressed images.

Limits (stated honestly)

The model doubles the resolution (2×) — not 4× or 8×. Very large inputs are downscaled first so the network stays within browser memory limits (the long side is capped at 1024 px, and the output is twice that). Processing is local but not instant: expect roughly 10-60 seconds depending on image size and your device.

Why your images stay private

Commercial upscalers ask you to upload your images; this one runs the model on your own device via WebAssembly. Only the model is downloaded (once, from Hugging Face); your image never leaves your computer.
