About Typing Speed Test

How fast do you type? Find out in one minute: a random passage appears, you type it, and the test scores your words per minute and accuracy live as you go. No account, no ads, no leaderboard — just you and the clock.

How to use Typing Speed Test

  1. Pick a test duration (15, 30, or 60 seconds).
  2. Click into the text box and start typing the passage.
  3. Watch your live WPM and accuracy; when the time runs out, you get your final score.

Understanding your typing speed

How WPM is calculated

The standard definition counts every 5 correctly typed characters as one word (including spaces). So typing 300 correct characters in a minute is 60 WPM. Mistyped characters don't count toward your speed, and accuracy is reported separately so you can see the trade-off.

This test follows that convention, updating the numbers live about five times per second.

What's a good typing speed?

WPMLevel
Below 30Hunt-and-peck — touch typing would be a big win
30–45Average casual typist
45–65Comfortable everyday speed (average office worker ≈ 40)
65–90Fast — professional writers and developers often land here
90+Exceptional — competitive typist territory

How to improve

  • Learn touch typing: fingers on the home row (ASDF / JKL;), eyes on the screen, not the keyboard.
  • Prioritize accuracy — speed follows naturally once mistakes drop below ~3%.
  • Practice in short daily sessions rather than long occasional ones.
  • Slow down deliberately on punctuation and capitals; that's where most time is lost.

Frequently asked questions

Is this typing test really free?

Yes — free with no account, no ads, and unlimited attempts.

Are my results uploaded or stored?

No. The test runs entirely in your browser; results are computed locally and disappear when you close the tab. There is no leaderboard and no tracking.

Why does the passage change every time?

Each test assembles a fresh random passage from common English words, so you can't memorize the text — the score measures real typing, not recall.

Does it count mistakes?

Yes — wrong characters are highlighted red, excluded from your WPM, and reflected in the accuracy percentage.

Can I use it on mobile?

Yes, though typing tests are designed for physical keyboards; on-screen keyboards work but won't show your true speed.
