Merging PDF files: a practical guide

Why combine PDFs into one file?

Separate PDFs are hard to share, easy to lose, and awkward to review. Merging them into a single document keeps everything in one place: the right page order, one file to email or archive, and one set of permissions.

  • Contracts and their signed amendments
  • Scanned pages from a flatbed scanner or phone app
  • A report split into chapters by different authors
  • Invoices that belong to the same billing period
  • Receipts and supporting documents for an expense claim

How this tool merges your files

The merge is done by pdf-lib running as JavaScript in your browser. Your files are read into memory, the pages are copied into a new PDF in the order you choose, and the result is offered as a download. At no point is anything uploaded — you can verify this in your browser's network tab: the only requests the page makes are for its own static assets.

Because pages are copied rather than re-rendered, text stays selectable, vector graphics stay sharp, and most interactive form fields survive the merge.

Tips for a clean merge

Check the page order before you merge — you can reorder the files in the list, and the output follows that order exactly.

If one of the inputs is password-protected, remove the password first; protected files cannot be read.

Mixed page sizes (A4 + Letter) are fine: each page keeps its own size inside the merged document.

Very large merges (hundreds of megabytes) use a lot of memory. If your device struggles, merge in two batches and merge the results.

Is it safe to merge sensitive documents here?

Yes — safer than most online mergers, in fact. Typical 'merge PDF online' services require you to upload your documents to their servers. This page never uploads anything: the entire operation happens inside your browser tab, and closing the tab leaves nothing behind. That makes it suitable for contracts, financial records, HR documents, and anything else you would not hand to a third party.

Frequently asked questions

Is this PDF merger really free?

Yes — completely free, with no account, no watermark, no file-size limit, and no limit on how many files you merge.

How many PDFs can I merge at once?

As many as you like. The only practical limit is your device's memory, since the pages are assembled in the browser. Hundreds of normal documents are fine; for extremely large batches, merge in two passes.

Does merging reduce the quality of my PDFs?

No. Pages are copied as-is into the new document — there is no re-rendering or re-compression, so text, images, and vector graphics keep their original quality.

What happens to form fields, links, and bookmarks?

Interactive form fields and links are preserved because pdf-lib copies page objects directly. Bookmarks from the source files are not carried over.

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. All processing happens locally in your browser using WebAssembly and Web APIs. Your files never leave your computer — close the tab and nothing remains.
